Makerstoun is a small community to the north and west of Floors. Unlike Smailholm and Nenthorn there is no recognised village centre. Community activities tend to occur around the village hall, the church, or the war memorial.
At the centre of the estate is Makerstoun House, the family home of Lord Biddulph.
The estate comprises high-quality agricultural land and supports a number of family-run farms. At the heart of each farm is a small “farm town”. There are six of these small groups of houses in Makerstoun. While in former times the cottages would have housed agricultural workers the current occupants have a wide variety of jobs, both on and off the estate.
UK cycle route 1 (Dover to Tain) runs through the village, as does the long distance path, the Borders Abbeys Way.
The community works hard to be a friendly, supportive and welcoming community, both to residents and visitors to the area.
